The front of the Alamo
During the Texas war of independence from Mexico, the Alamo was occupied by a group of Texan volunteer soldiers including James Bowie, William Travis and Davy Crockett. On February 23 1836, a Mexican force in the thousands began a 13 day siege on a vastly outnumbered force of around 200 volunteers. On March 6, when Mexican forces broke through an outer wall, General Santa Anna ordered his men to take no prisoners and only a small number of Texans were spared. In 1845, the United States annexed Texas and quartered troops and stored supplies at the Alamo.
