In the 1997 census, there were around 2,000 descendants of the Uru but only a few hundred still live on the islands. Food is cooked on fires that are placed on piles of stones and the toilets are on tiny islands next to the main islands. The Uru also bury their dead on the mainland in special cemeteries.
